The STEM leaders group consists of the leadership boards of several student groups in the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics. With the help of Campus Life and New Student Programs, the group was initially formed in the Spring semester of 2008 and seeks to support student organizations, to promote greater connection, and to help plan events to increase student involvement within the college.

Blinded by the Light: Urban K-12 Portable Planetarium Outreach Program

Presentation

During this 2008-2009 academic year, the Blinded by the Light: Urban K-12 Portable Planetarium Outreach Program has already impacted over 700 students and educators in Baltimore City and has provided service learning opportunities for 10 pre-service teaching interns. The fundamental purpose of the program is to bring astronomy back to urban settings via Towson University’s Portable StarLab Planetarium, and to allow urban youth an opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the universe in their own neighborhoods and to maximize their observation and exploration experiences of the night sky despite the presence of heavy light pollution. In tandem, this program affords pre-service teacher interns with an opportunity to engage in science activities within an urban K-12 school community, and allows them to strengthen their science content and pedagogical skills by learning how to present planetarium shows. Each planetarium show is specifically tailored to each school’s science curriculum and is designed to be culturally relevant to the school’s student population. The Baltimore City schools that have participated in the program are Saint Elizabeth School (Grades 6-12), Harriet Tubman Elementary School (Grades 1-5), Baltimore Rising Star Academy (Grades 6-8), Franklin Square Elementary/Middle School (Grades 5-8), Arlington Elementary/Middle School (Grades 3-8), and Rosemont Elementary School (Grades 3-5). The dedicated pre-service interns involved with this program are Gordon Amato, Loren Klimas, Meagan Smith, Jessica Rogers, Stefanie Davis, Danielle Bianconi, Jennifer Beach, Justin Leonard, Danielle Rosenheck, and Lana Shanti.

Bridges to Baccalaureate Program

The Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program is supported by an grant from the National Institutes of Health. The program focuses on the transition of underrepresented STEM students from Baltimore City Community College and Community College of Baltimore County (Catonsville) to Towson University after the completion of their A.S. degree and provides support of these students to ensure their retention and completion of the baccalaureate program in a STEM related field. In addition to providing students with research opportunities, this program includes several ancillary components that we consider key to meeting the project goals. These include: 1) Group Meetings to foster cooperative learning and to encourage group problem solving and communication; 2) Research Seminars by a multiculturally diverse group of invited speakers to broaden the participant’s exposure to the biomedical sciences; and, 3) Classes in ethics, scientific writing and scientific presentations.

Incorporating Science in a Fine Arts Curriculum

This presentation will showcase the work of students in the Digital II Photography class. I will talk about the two assignments that generated the work: Organic Synthesis of forms and Appropriation and Transformation. In both of these assignments I am interested in getting the students to consider incorporating ideas about science in their work. They are encouraged to use biological forms as a basis for creating pattern, form, texture and color as well as other materials such as charts, graphs, diagrams, etc. that reference the sciences of astronomy, cartography, genetics and engineering.
